Conscience in Conversation, Circa 1943

This wasn't an act of war!

Yes, it most certainly was.

No, no it wasn't.

It was, at minimum, an act of violence.

This was not an act of violence.  It was an act of indifference.

Maybe that's worse.

Most likely.

Do you think a conscience is tangible?

No.

Maybe if it was, maybe if we could surgically remove it or implant it, all of this would be preventable.

Not likely.  Then you're assuming all consciences are the same, and they are not.

But what is right and what is wrong is generally pretty black and white.  At least when it comes to the big picture items.  Wouldn't you agree?

I'd like to think so.  But if I believed that, then I'd have to assume no room for subjectivity.  And subjectivity in a conscience is what removes the robotics of all of this.

But maybe we should stop leaving room for human error.  Maybe we proved that we abused the latitudes when it comes to our moral compass.

Maybe.  But if you put us all on autopilot, it would be impossible to maintain an infinite moral equilibrium.

How do you know that?

I suppose I don't know that to be a certainty, but I know that nothing stays the same.  This much I know.

How?

Because you believe in evolution.  And I believe in erosion.
