We were destined to die at a drive in movie---
because that's where they wouldn't find us
and then we could be exactly what we wanted to be
And out there beyond the field
and in the artificial moonlight
you would kiss me long---
and often---
because the only thing over our shoulders was the backseat
And I would wrap the palm of my hand around your cheek
because that was where it belonged
and that was how I knew I was home
And in your arms, I would age the way I always wanted to---
with the deafening of an opinion here and there--
I would wait for your return---
there until there was nothing but the penultimate
They said we were dead---
but I knew wrong from wrong
and I would put my lips on your eyelids
until we drifted into the stuff of great fiction
Love should get you further into life rather than the alternative
