The Misfortune Teller

All of this gets worse,
but I am not sure if that's what you wanted to hear from me,

I have a crystal ball,
and a lot of things I can say to make this go better than one would expect,

but you shouldn't be expecting anything,

that velvet drape has been there for 14 years,
and if I turned a blacklight to it,
you would run,

and everything you wanted me to tell you was about a century ago,
or nearly a century ago,

and you wanted me to raise ghosts from the North Atlantic,
but we knew many, many Aprils ago that that wasn't going to happen,

too many souls on board to nowhere,
too many to count in here,
around this table,
with my preprogrammed little lines

and I would love to tell you that you deserve better,
because you do,
but instead I'll say what I've always thought,

nobody deserves anything,

and I was here to collect a toll on that sentiment---
