In Put

You are an awful human being,
one that I could not stand,

but I dipped in and out on you,
hoping you were something more than you actually were,

projecting great expectations onto you,
attributes that you just were not smart enough to retain,

and this was all my fault,
and I knew that,

from the get go,
so no one needed to tell me any of that again,

they just needed to roll their eyes,
and show me disapproval,
and disappointment,

and then they could be on their way,

and me on mine,
because this wouldn't be the first time I refused to apologize for being me,

and we wouldn't have to worry about all the ways you let me down at the turn of the century,
we just wouldn't,

because no good could,
would come from getting into the details of another decade
