Upstairs, 1926

I laid myself out for you,
like a dress,
off the side of the bed,
as if I had been here for awhile,
but not too long,
not too late,

and I kept reaching my toes out for the mint Mary Janes,
and the After Eights,
but I said I wouldn't move,
even if it didn't matter to you,

it was my word,
even if I was the only one who could hear it
