Mutual, July 1931

You sounded like the best thing that could happen to me,
you looked like a reprieve,
and your heart was in the right place,
where no one could take it from you,

and all I could do when I looked at you was imagine you and I dancing slowly and without hesitation,
very far away from here,
where no one would laugh at us,
no one would think we were less than we were,
no one would try to pry apart our hands,
and I would hold onto you until you told me I needed to go,

I wish you would,
I wish you would,
I wish you would,

if only,
if only you would
