The Pontificating Preface of Punxsutawney Phil

We could do something about all of this,
if we wanted to,
if we really wanted to,

Right around this time of the year,
every year,
we got down in the dumps,

situated in an untimely ditch,
where oblivion seemed more imminent than usual,

It was cloudy,
ominous,
and unforgiving,

until it wasn't---

they wanted me to see lots of things,
but they never let me look for myself,

I had to be without a shadow for you to love me,
but once a year for you to realize that attention must be paid,

but I'd like to think I was more than all of this,
I'm fairly certain of it,

but I just couldn't stay grounded
