For My Britches

You once said everything was derivative
but then you took it back,
and when I asked if that is what you meant,
you stayed mum and mad,

I once took my own advice,
from my own stories,
and closed this chapter book,
just as parchment hit its hardened back,

Best we kept our little stories just as they were,
little,
and in here,
inside our tent for freaks,

Just because I was something different,
extraordinary even,
did not mean that I did not understand this nonsense,
did not mean that I was only extra,
or ordinary,

didn't it now---
