Good People

The first of the month was never a good day---
and when it got too quiet outside,
I remembered why the beginning of summer smelled so bad

At 17, confidence was not elusive---
being invincible was a pre-requisite until just prior---
and just after---
the turn of the century

She was no exception---
in fact, she was exactly who they talk about---
when they talk about who these good things happen to

But she was different,
and Witty
and implored to find the time to underachieve

It was on this evening---
just before sundown---
that she floated side by side with the canal

sidestepping the mess
only to come face to face to face with the front of a ringless tree
and a four ringed motorcoach

severed under here
and here---
and split in half

until her soul deluged everything up here
and there was a torrent on these rolling hills

and she shut her lips---
and her eyes

To the victor goes the spoils,
and she was impervious to agony
but plagued with the prize of watching theirs

  1. so sad Sam. I feel bad saying this, but what was her name? One of those truly impactful moments in life. This is extremely well written. You've latched on to something very tactile and given the reader just enough details to make this story feel authentically historical.

  2. Sometime we have to witness things we have no control over. Other times we can own the world!!!!
