The Runner Up

I was wondering if you would still let me be your baby doll?
Or maybe just doll? Dolls were good and people thought dolls were pretty, right? Right?
I know you did.

You wanted me just this way.
And that way.
Isn't that right? Right?
I could cock my neck to the left and then diagonally,
so that we would look a certain way.

So I went out and bought a paintbrush and I let you sit me right up like a China doll
because this was the whitest I would ever be
and the most blood I would ever let cut through these creases

But just so you know,
I had a grand plan,
to open my mouth at just the right moment
and let you know that you could take up all the slack you want
and braid all the leashes you could braid

but anyway you cut this,
you were on deck

  1. Very dark writing. The mocking tone at first seems self-deprecating, even submissive, but we soon realize the great deal of cynicism and rebuking angst welling up in the author's voice.
