Left of Lift

He was surrounded by the quick draws
oh. if only they were the quick and the dead.

He submerged his body in the river and held his head just high enough,
so they could see what was wrong in his eyes---

and then he went under

with only the sounds of the four horsemen of the apocalypse
untouchable in their brilliance
and resounding in and out of his canals
reminding him of his worthlessness

He wore workmen's boots to get the job done good and right
but it allowed him little time to think this all through

and there, under a Memphis moonlight
he bid adieu to his Hallelujahs
because he tried and tried to please the Lord
knowing all the while one day they would think of him fondly---

but only before turning the bend

  1. Wonderful imagery. Is this about a baptism? There is a strong spiritual tone to the piece, although I am having trouble piecing together each disparate stanza.
