Late Last Night

These things always catch us off guard---

and then they make us realize we could dream big

bigger

It was sending small and calculated tremors up my legs

with a vibrato and a stronghold around my knee caps

and it all turned to wonder---

about whether we were good

for each other

and there was all this conjecture

conjuring up here in the treehouse

Wouldn't it just be easier---

if we said it?

or if I showed you the landscape between my eyes and my mouth

yes, that would do it just fine---

because then we could do this all without words

You would see me in my free fall

and you would cock your head to the right

and form a half smile

and mine would rise in return

and we would have the irrevocable understanding
