You broke my heart and this was the best I could do with it
turn you into something everyone else could talk to
could talk about
You set my soul on fire and I resented you for that
and for the fact that the summer heat on the back of my neck reminded me of you
and the way your fingers used to rest there
I was your property
and I never belonged to anyone
because I hadn't wanted to
I really missed who I was in 1998
and I could tell it was taking its toll---
on us
We were just a revolving door---
at the mercy and consequence of a stolen glance
and a crooked smile
We were still crooked
stunning in our misery
constantly insecure from perfection
and we would stay that way---
all the way---
to the grave
Sometimes life is full of missed opportunities.
ReplyDeleteThis one made me sad. Keep your chin up. It's well-versed though, particularly this line:

Great piece of writing.
