Sleepwalker

Nightmares were standing at the foot of my bed---
scheming and calculating
seeping through the sheets and up through my insides
like a rip tide
and a ruthless undertow

pulling my toes downward and out of position
then my legs and hips
crawling into the viscus

winding up and up and up and up and up and up
first the reel ran black and white
and then in technicolor

It tickled my throat and then my cheeks and then the synapses
flapping like stingrays
full of wonderment and opportunity for damage

And I had to laugh at the thought of insomnia
what with the lucid nature of this infestation and---
Magritte the puppeteer

It all ended with carpet indentations and---
the peanut butter all over the light switch

  1. well done. only criticism is that we should not be told so early on that this is a nightmare. Let us infer that from the details.
