Why do I hate Twitter?
And by problem, I mean a global nuisance.
And by global nuisance, I mean dumbing down of the population.
And by dumbing down of the population, I mean an unfortunate exponential demise of the human spirit.
Most of you know my affinity to the trailer for THE SOCIAL NETWORK (http://social-network-movie-trailer.blogspot.com/). It's brilliant and terrifying and oddly offputting because it may very well be the self-reflection that no one in my generation is ready to have. But we're at the point where movies and social documentation of the earlier part of this decade has become frequent and commonplace. It could go one of two ways with this movie. It could either make Generation Y (aka Generation Next, Generation 9-11) look like the smartest and most reckless generation to date--or--it's going to make us look like complete jackasses. But there's a point to this movie. It's a cultural checkup on our priorities, our narcissism, our humanity.
Having said that, this satirical take on THE SOCIAL NETWORK trailer is proof positive that Twitter is not only unnecessary but now damaging to the social climate.
All I can say is thank G-d someone else besides me feels this way. With every tweet, we are literally removing all mysticism and furthermore, romanticism, from our lives. It's ALL too much information. All of it. And as far back as I can remember, we were all the better before it came along. You can fight your battles, prove your [what kind of?] worth, and have verbal warfare with an arch enemy all from your smart phone. There's something wrong with that, right? I don't know. I just don't like allocating such power to morons (which many people become once they are surgically attached to the device).
Twitter is the primary example of taking freedom of speech for granted. And while all this hostility and frustration on my part can certainly be cited as just that--it also begs the question: Shouldn't we be alarmed that we are part of a country that embraces leadership, pioneering, ethical interpretations of manifest destiny, and striking out on your own--yet here we are--creating an entirely new generation that asks all of us to be followers?
I went to the movies tonight and had some unbuttered popcorn
