List of likes.
List of dislikes.
List of the memorable.
List of the forgettable.
List of movies.
And apparently, even the list of lists.
So tonight, I'm going to talk about a new list. A list of the best titles in literary history. Of course, by best I mean favorite. I realize that the list is completely subjective. By the way, if it wasn't subjective, it wouldn't be a fucking list.
Having said that, this is only the first of the title lists. So calm down over the fact that you don't see Lord of the Flies among the other residents below. You'll have to keep reading my pieces to find my next installment. But Lord of the Flies won't be in that chapter either...because it sucks. And even the title sucked all the life out of its apparent groundbreaking use of symbolism. Whatever.
In no particular order, round one goes to:
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
THE GREAT GATSBY
AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY
THE SORROWS OF AN AMERICAN
THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER
THE FOUNTAINHEAD
ROLL OF THUNDER, HEAR MY CRY
AS I LAY DYING
THE MALTESE FALCON
THE LOVE PARADE
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE
THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS
THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE
THE UNDERTAKING
THE AMERICAN WAY OF DEATH
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE
THE LOVE OF THE LAST TYCOON
THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY
THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING
JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE NIGHT
THE STRANGER
ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE
THIS SIDE OF PARADISE
LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA
THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU
GONE WITH THE WIND
THE COLOR PURPLE
DEATH OF A SALESMAN
THERE'S BEEN A DEATH IN THE OPPOSITE HOUSE
THE TELL-TALE HEART
THE LOVE SONG OF J. ALFRED PRUFROCK
TAMERLANE
THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA
WE THE LIVING
Another characteristic of a list? The fact that it begs a question--or in this case two questions.
One. Can you find the common linguistic thread in the list?
Two. Which title is fictional? Yes, they're all fictional. But which isn't an actual existing piece of fiction--except for its existence as a cover page in another piece of fiction.
cool list. I always feel that it is important to chronicle benchmark moments in our lives. Lists actually help us understand who we are and what has made us the way we are. I love them. Keep them up.
